Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Aberdeen, MD- Ripken Baseball today announced that due to the overwhelming participation and success of last year's contest, the Aberdeen IronBirds and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's Smoking Stops Here program have partnered up for a second poster contest. The purpose of the "Smoking Stops Here" contest is to give children the opportunity to express themselves creatively and at the same time promote the positive aspects of choosing a smoke-free lifestyle.

"Smoking and Sports Don't Mix" will be the slogan used by each and every participant. All contestants will receive a certificate and an item from the Aberdeen IronBirds and Maryland-Smoking Stops Here. Prizes will be awarded to eight semifinalists and one grand prize winner, who will be acknowledged during an IronBirds game in 2005, receive tickets to a University of Maryland game at Ripken Stadium and have the opportunity to be a batboy or girl at a 2005 IronBirds game.

"Ripken Stadium is proud to be smoke-free," said IronBirds General Manager Jeff Eiseman. "The IronBirds are honored to be associated with a statewide movement that sends a positive message and helps educate kids to the dangers of tobacco at a young age. We believe, like last year, that this contest is a win-win for everyone involved, and the message of making healthy choices is what it's all about."

All eight of the Harford County Middle Schools were represented in last year's contest. Maddie Salamone from Bel Air Middle School was the winner, with her poster centering on the theme "Throw Smoke. Don't Inhale It."
