SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Blink, and you'll miss him.
Birmingham Iron receiver Devozea Felton has earned the nickname "Turbo" for his ability to take the top off a defense.
At 5-foot-7, 160 pounds, Felton isn't the biggest player, but that doesn't matter if defenders can't get a hand on him.
Felton, who starred at Tuskegee (Ala.) University, has lined up at slot receiver, and works as the punt returner during practice. He's turned heads with his long speed, but his hands have also been impressive, including with a one-hand catch during practice on Friday.
"He flies," Iron quarterback Blake Sims said of Felton. "In a blink of an eye, he's gone."
Felton doesn't talk trash when he burns the defense in practice. He remains humble and let's his feet and hands do the talking.
Below is the transcript of Felton's interview with Iron team reporter Marq Burnett following Day 20 of training camp.
On earning the nickname 'Turbo'...
Felton: "Speed. It comes with speed. It was probably the third day of practice, and I think I bombed the defense for like 70 yards. Just getting behind the defense to be honest."
On what he saw on the play where he caught a pass one-handed...
Felton: "Really I just saw the hole in the zone defense. (Iron QB) Blake Sims delivered a great pass."
On how the chemistry between the quarterbacks and receivers has been...
Felton: "Great, actually. We're getting together everyday in meeting rooms, and on the field like coming out here early. We're making sure we're on top of that because when it comes game time, it's going to be on."
On what he can bring to the team...
Felton: "Speed, for sure. My ability in open space. And special teams as well."
On avoiding big hits, given his size...
Felton: "Just protecting myself, to be honest with you. It doesn't matter to me how big I am. A hit is a hit, to be honest."
On how good he thinks this offense can be...
Felton: "Great. We have all the weapons to be great."
