Iowa Cubs News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (66-59) stole a doubleheader sweep from the Iowa Cubs (46-81) with two walk-off victories, taking Game 1 3-2 and Game 2 4-3, Wednesday at Security Service Field.
Chris Coghlan helped Iowa get on the board, going first-to-home on a Mike Freeman double after a taking a walk to start the game. The I-Cubs would push the edge to 2-0, before Colorado Springs retaliated with a two-run fifth to knot the contest. The tie would hold through seven to force extras, but the Sky Sox made the most of the free base runner as a wild pitch from Anthony Bass (L, 0-2), moved the runner to third before a Domingo Santana single secured a walk-off win.
Making a spot-start, Rob Zastryzny allowed just two hits and walked one through 3.0 innings. Freeman stayed hot with the first of two 2-for-4 games on the night. The infielder is 10-for-20 in five games since coming off the disabled list.
Iowa also opened the scoring in the first inning in Game 2 on a Jason Vosler RBI single. The Sky Sox would catch up immediately, plating a run on two hits in the bottom of the frame. Colorado Spring took the lead with a run in third, before Iowa re-captured the edge on an RBI double from Mark Zagunis and a Jacob Hannemann RBI single in the fourth. The score would hold at 3-2 until the seventh when a bases-loaded double from Santana gave the outfielder his second walk-off hit of the night.
Luke Farrell gave the I-Cubs 5.0 strong innings, scattering two runs on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts. In his Iowa Cubs debut, Allen Webster pitched a scoreless sixth. James Norwood (L, 1-1) came in the close the game, but walked three and gave up one timely hit to come away with the loss.
Iowa and Colorado Springs meet for the final time tomorrow at 7:40 p.m. CT. Follow the action on AM 940 or www.iowacubs.com.
