ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Iowa Cubs (6-21) rose from the dead to defeat the Round Rock Armadillos (11-19) by a final score of 7-3 on Fear the Walking Dead Night at Dell Diamond. Armadillos LF Willie Calhoun finished 3-4 with a double in the defeat.
Round Rock starter RHP David Ledbetter (0-4, 5.24) suffered the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in 7.0 innings of work. Iowa reliever LHP Rob Zastryzny (2-0, 2.35) earned the win following 1.2 shutout innings of relief.
The Cubs tallied their first of two big innings in the third. CF Jacob Hannemann opened the inning with a double, then DH Chris Gimenez followed up with a walk. After a Chesny Young sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, SS Mike Freeman drove in a pair of runs with a single. 2B David Bote followed up with a two-run homer to right field that padded his team's lead to 4-0.
Armadillos 2B Christian Lopes sparked a fifth-inning rally with a leadoff triple. CF Scott Heineman put Round Rock on the board with an RBI single in the next at-bat. After a Calhoun single, DH Destin Hood laced a clutch two-out double down the left-field line, plating a pair or runs to trim the gap to 4-3.
However, the Cubs pulled away with a three-run eighth inning. Bote began the frame with a walk then raced home on an ensuing Efren Navarro double. 'Dillos RHP Connor Sadzeck then walked C Taylor Davis, RF Bijan Rademacher and 3B Ryan Court in consecutive order to force in another run.
Round Rock manager Jason Wood called on LHP Adam Loewen to enter in relief. The lefty walked Hannemann to extend the gap to 7-3 before recovering to retire the final two hitters of the inning. The Armadillos bats couldn't find a late spark as the Cubs held on to claim the 7-3 decision.
The Armadillos transform back into the Express on Sunday for game three against the Cubs. Round Rock RHP Yovani Gallardo (0-0, 4.91) is scheduled to face RHP Duane Underwood (0-3, 4.35). First pitch at Dell Diamond is set for 1:05 p.m.
