Iowa Beats Tacoma

The Iowa Cubs used the longball to defeat the Tacoma Rainiers, 11-6, in front of a

season-high 13,206 fans at Prinicpal Park Friday night.

Marquez Smith hit an

in-the-park home run in the fourth inning and hit a solo shot in the third inning to

participate in Iowa's five homer night. He has hit three home runs in two games.

Bryan LaHair hit a solo shot in the third inning and Micah Hoffpauir hit a two-run

blast in the fifth inning. LaHair and Hoffpauir joined Smith to homer in

consecutive games. All three had home runs in last night's win against Tacoma.

Brad Snyder was the first Cub to homer in the third inning to get Iowa on the board

1-0. It was fireworks from then on, as the Cubs took a 4-0 lead by the end of the

inning. Hoffpauir extended his season-high hit streak to 15 games with a single in

the first inning. He was 2-for-4 on the night. Snyder was 3-for-4 with three runs

scored in the win.

Iowa took the momentum into the fourth inning when Smith hit

his in-the-park home run. It was a lined shot off the centerfield wall that bounced

away from Tacoma center fielder Greg Halman. Snyder singled and Hoffpauir walked

before Ty Wright doubled home the duo for a 6-0 advantage. LaHair then singled,

driving in Wright, and scored on the inside-the-park home run for the 9-0 lead.

Hoffpauir's fifth-inning home run drove in two giving Iowa 11 total runs.

The

Rainiers also used the longball to get on the board. In the fifth inning Halman hit

a solo homer to spoil the shutout and make it 11-1. David Winfree hit a solo shot in

the sixth and Tacoma collected three runs in the seventh inning. Halman doubled

driving in Brad Nelson and Eliezer Alfonzo hit a two-run shot making it an 11-5

game. Tacoma scored another run in the ninth for the 11-6 final. Jay Jackson

(9-6, 4.33) picked up the win. He thre 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

Andy Baldwin (7-6, 5.80) was tagged with the loss allowing eight runs on nine hits

in 3.1 innings. The Cubs go for the sweep of this series Saturday night at 7:05

p.m.
