Portland Beavers News Release
OMAHA, Neb. - Wily Mo Peña went 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBIs while Mike Baxter was 4-for-5 with three runs scored as the Portland Beavers used a franchise-record-tying 10-run third inning to defeat the Omaha Royals 13-6 at Rosenblatt Stadium Friday night.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Beavers (43-71), who received multi-hit efforts from five different players, including Sean Kazmar, who was 3-for-6 with a homer and three RBIs, and Josh Barfield, who had two hits and two RBIs.
The Beavers totaled nine hits and sent 16 men to the plate against starter Edgar Osuna (0-2) and reliever Devon Lowery in the third, scoring six runs after there were two outs in the frame. Kazmar, Baxter, Peña and Barfield each had two hits in the inning and Aaron Cunningham walked twice while Craig Stansberry committed both the second and third outs.
The outburst matched a 10-run sixth inning at Salt Lake on May 23, 2008.
Cesar Ramos (3-5) got the win despite walking a season-high six batters and allowing three runs over five innings.
Scott Thorman led the Royals (60-54) with three RBIs. He also pitched a scoreless ninth. David Lough hit an RBI triple, his ninth three-base hit of the season, good for second in the PCL.
Osuna gave up nine runs - all earned - on six hits and four walks in only 2 2/3 innings.
Omaha matched Peña's two-run blast in the first with two runs in the bottom of the inning as Ramos walked in a run and a second run scored on a sacrifice fly.
The Royals would briefly take a 3-2 lead in the second as Jai Miller doubled and scored on Kurt Mertins' RBI single.
The Beavers' half of the third started out harmlessly as Luis Durango grounded out. Then Kazmar took Osuna deep with his fifth home run of the season, and after Baxter singled, Peña added his second two-run shot of the night. Cunningham walked and Barfield singled to set up Stansberry's sacrifice fly. Osuna walked the next two batters before Lowery came on in relief. Durango then began a string of four straight two-out singles by Portland batters as Kazmar followed with a two-run single, Baxter hit an RBI single and Peña singled. Cunningham drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the ninth run of the inning and Barfield hit an RBI single to put the Beavers up 12-3.
Baxter scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth and the Royals scored once in the eighth and two runs in the ninth.
The Beavers and Royals finish their four-game series at Rosenblatt Stadium Saturday at 4:35 p.m. (Pacific).
