Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Kannapolis Intimidators (19-20, 47-60) didn't start the first game of their home stand how they would've liked against the Columbia Fireflies (16-23, 40-65), totaling just three hits on the day in a 3-0 loss at Intimidators Stadium supported by Atrium Health.
Three of the top eight prospects in the New York Mets organization are currently playing for the Fireflies, and it didn't take long for a couple of them to show why they're at the top of that list. In the top of the first, Ronny Mauricio, their top prospect, hit a hard single up the middle and was immediately driven in on the next pitch from a Mark Vientos home run (11) to center field to give Columbia the 2-0 lead.
After that first inning, Kevin Folman (L, 0-3) settled into the game. Over the next three innings, he retired the Fireflies in order.
Unfortunately for the Intimidators, they were also getting shut down at the plate. Through the first four innings, they totaled just one base hit.
In the top of the fifth, Columbia got to Folman again. Shervyen Newton tripled to start the inning and was driven in one batter later, on a sac fly from Hayden Sanger to extend the lead to 3-0. The Fireflies threatened with a couple more hits in the inning, but Folman managed to get out of it and bring his day to an end. He tossed five innings, gave up five hits, three earned runs, and struck out five. Johan Dominguez got the first call out of the bullpen for Kannapolis.
Dominguez, and later on Wyatt Burns, combined to pitch a scoreless and hitless final four innings on the mound for K-town.
Despite getting a couple hits here and there over the next few innings, the Intimidators didn't find enough holes in the defense to get anything going.
Kannapolis will continue their series with Columbia on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The starter is TBD for the Intimidators against Daison Acosta (1-2, 3.50 ERA) for the Fireflies.
