Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - After fighting back from a 5-0 deficit to tie the score against the Carolina Mudcats, a Tony Wolters three-run inside-the-park homerun undid the Keys as they proceeded to lose 10-6 in front of 7,289 fans at Harry Grove Stadium.
Wolters hit the inside-the-park homerun with two outs in the top of the sixth inning after a deep fly ball to centerfield went off the glove of a diving Trent Mummey. The ball took a weird ricochet off of Mummey's glove and by the time he collected the ball, Wolters was rounding third and on his way home.
The rare inside-the-parker gave Carolina an 8-5 lead and was enough to give them the win as the Keys fell to 11-12 in the second half of the year and 38-55 overall.
Overall, a combined five homeruns were hit in the game, which included the inside-the-park homerun and a grand slam.
Eric Beaulac, who gave up the homerun to Wolters, was charged the loss as he gave up his first earned runs of the year.
The Keys found themselves down by five runs without even taking a swing. Devin Jones, making his first start of his pro career in his Advanced-A debut, gave up five runs after facing just five batters.
After the first three batters reached on singles to load the bases, Jesus Aguilar knocked in the game's first run with a single of his own. With the bases still loaded, Carlos Moncrief emptied them with a grand slam homerun to put Carolina up 5-0 with nobody out and just five batters into the game.
The Keys, as they've done plenty of times in the second half of the year, came back to tie the game.
Ty Kelly hit a solo homerun in the first to get the Keys on the board and they would draw to within one in the third inning, thanks once again to Kelly.
After Trent Mummey doubled home a runner in the third inning, Kelly hit his second homerun of the night, hitting a two-run shot over the centerfield wall to cut the deficit to one as the Keys trailed just 5-4.
They would tie it in the fourth inning when Garabez Rosa singled in a run as the Keys successfully dug themselves out of a big hole.
Yet the momentum wouldn't last as Wolters' inside-the-park homerun put Carolina back on top and gave them a second lead - one they wouldn't surrender.
The Keys will now ready for the Salem Red Sox, who they host at Harry Grove Stadium in a four-game series from Monday through Thursday.
LHP Tim Berry (1-2, 4.50 ERA) gets the start for the Keys as he'll face RHP Brandon Workman (7-4, 2.94 ERA).
