Ingold's Walk-Off Single Sends Sliders' Streak To 4

June 26, 2012 - Prospect League (Prospect)
Springfield Sliders News Release

The Springfield Sliders knocked off the Hannibal Cavemen 9-8 in walk-off fashion to extend their season-high winning streak to four games.

Hannibal got on the board first when SS J. Golden tripled and then scored on an RBI groundout by DH Zach Nichols. The Sliders would answer with three to take the lead in the bottom of the first, on doubles from DH Matt Tellor and LF Mike Fitzgerald. The Sliders scored another run in the second inning on a two out infield single by 3B Jake Ingold to increase their lead to 4-1. The lead would grow to 6-1 in the fifth inning, when Fitzgerald hit his second RBI double of the game and C Matt Stevens followed that up with an RBI triple to center field. Springfield would add one more run in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Matt Tellor, for his third RBI of the night. Sliders' starter Zac Wittmus had his best outing of the year for the Sliders, going eight innings, giving up six hits, and three walks, and it looked like he was going to pick up his second win of the season. However, the Hannibal bats woke up in the top of the ninth as they sent eleven hitters to the plate against three Sliders' relievers, scoring seven runs to take an 8-7 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.

The Sliders weren't done yet either. 1B Reagan Fowler started off the rally with a one out single in the ninth and then was lifted for pinch runner Ryan Aper. With two outs and Aper still at first, David Kerian came in to pinch hit and singled up the middle, sending Aper all the way to third. 2B Michael Hurwitz was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. CF Wade Rothermich walked to bring home Aper, and leave the bases loaded for Ingold. Ingold lined a single up the middle to score Kerian and secure the victory, the first walk-off victory for the Sliders this year. T R Dunne picked up the victory, his second of the year.

This game was played under protest by Hannibal due to eligibility concerns of a few Sliders' players. The same two teams meet here at Robin Roberts Stadium again tomorrow at 6:35, with the game broadcast live on Ustream.

The Springfield Sliders are members of the Prospect League, playing at historic Robin Roberts Stadium. The Sliders are members of the Western Division along with the Danville (IL) Dans, DuBois County (IN) Bombers, Hannibal (MO) Cavemen, Quincy (IL) Gems, and Terre Haute (IN) Rex.
