Spokane Indians News Release
KEIZER, OR - The Spokane Indians are Northwest League Champions! The Indians defeated the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 6-5 in extra innings Sunday night to win game four and take home the Freitas Northwest League Championship Trophy.
The Indians were the best team all year in the Northwest League, compiling a 51-25 record during the regular season. After dropping game one of the NWLCS, Spokane rallied to win the next three games in dramatic fashion. Catcher Doug Hogan hit a walk off home run during extra innings to win game two, and the Indians came back from an eight-run deficit in game three to win the game 11-10.
Game four was no different. The Volcanoes gained their first lead of the game after scoring two runs in the bottom of 7th, going up 5-4. The Indians answered right back and tied the game in the 8th on a Matt West ground out that scored Eric Fry. And in the 10th inning, after Dennis Guinn advanced to third on a steal and an error, Doug Hogan singled to left field to bring in Guinn for the go ahead run. Indians closer Corey Young did his job in the bottom of the 10th, earning the save and closing out the game. Reliever Juan Peralta picked up the win for his work in the 9th inning.
The title is the Indians eighth Northwest League Championship since 1987 and the fourth since 1999. The Indians won four consecutive titles from 1987 to 1990 and won the title in 1999, 2003 and again in 2005.
A large contingent of fans and Indians Booster Club members will be greeting the team as they arrive back at Avista Stadium on Monday morning. The team is expected to arrive around 6:00 a.m., so head out to Avista Stadium and welcome the 2008 Northwest League Champion Spokane Indians back to town.
