SPOKANE, WA - The Spokane Indians notched yet another win Tuesday night, but it wasn't just any win. Tonight's 6-4 win over the Boise Hawks marked the 50th win of the season for the Indians. The last time the Indians reached 50 wins was the 2003 season when they won the Northwest League Championship.
Spokane will look to do the same this year starting on Thursday, September 4th at 6:30 p.m. with game one of the Northwest League Championship Series presented by Pizza Pipeline. The Indians opponent was finally decided tonight when the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes clinched the division with a 3-0 victory over Vancouver.
Second baseman Kyle Higgins had a stellar night, extending and ending his consecutive hit streak at seven. Higgins finished 3 for 4 on the game with a double and one RBI. Right fielder Joey Butler went 2 for 4 with one home run and one RBI.
Indians starter Richard Bleier went six innings for the win, his fifth of the season. Bleier gave up six hits and four runs, three of those four runs were unearned. Closer Corey Young picked up his seventh save of the season after closing out the 9th inning with two strikeouts.
Indians Awarded NWL Field of the Year
The Northwest League announced today that Spokane has won the 2008 NWL Field of the Year. The award marks the tenth time in twelve seasons that the Indians have received the honor. In addition to this award, Indians head groundskeeper Brennan Prestley was named the STMA Groundskeeper of the Year for the Northwest League.
The Indians return to Avista Stadium tomorrow for the final regular season game against Boise. Tomorrow night is Season Finale Fireworks presented by AAA, Krem 2-TV and 98.9 KKZX.
