Indiana Fever News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever have selected 5-9 scoring guard Tiffany Mitchell with the ninth pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm. Indiana owns the No. 9 pick in each of the draft's three rounds, with second- and third-round picks to follow.
A shooting guard who helped South Carolina rise to national prominence in recent years, Mitchell was a two-time SEC Player of the Year and a three-time All-American while playing for former WNBA star Dawn Staley. Mitchell and the Gamecocks finished her senior season with an upset loss to Syracuse in the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, ending a 33-1 campaign that seemed destined for a return trip to the Final Four.
Mitchell averaged 14.9 points and 2.6 assists per game as a senior, shooting 41 percent overall and 33 percent from 3-point range. As a junior, she averaged 14.4 points and 2.8 assists while shooting 50 percent overall and 42 percent beyond the arc.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., who once hung Staley's Charlotte Sting jersey on her wall, Mitchell was named the most outstanding collegiate guard in the country as a junior, earning the award that bears Staley's name. She is the first South Carolina player ever to be drafted by the Fever.
WNBA training camps begin Sunday, April 24.
A WNBA playoff participant in 11 straight seasons and 12 times since 2002, the Indiana Fever have reached at least the conference finals eight times in the past 11 years - including WNBA Finals appearances in 2009 and 2015, and a WNBA championship in 2012. The Fever host a 2016 preseason game against the Dallas Wings on Sunday, May 1 (1:00 p.m.). The Fever tips off the 2016 regular season with a three-game homestand that begins Saturday, May 14 against Dallas (6:00 p.m.).
