Indiana Fever News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever has acquired 5-11 shooting guard Roneeka Hodges from the San Antonio Silver Stars in exchange for forward Tangela Smith, announced Fever chief operating officer and general manager Kelly Krauskopf.
"Tangela was terrific for us last year. I want to thank her for all that she did," said Krauskopf. "We are taking advantage of a situation where we can free up some cap space and get a bit younger. With Tamika Catchings playing more at the power forward position, we felt this was an opportunity to get her more time there."
She added, "Roneeka gives us another 3-point shooter to spread the floor. Her size and shooting will add depth to our perimeter."
Hodges, 29, replaces Smith, a 14-year veteran whose 448 games played are the most in WNBA history. Hodges begins her eighth pro season after appearing in 28 regular season games with five starts for the Silver Stars in 2011. She averaged 3.9 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, including a 19-point effort that featured 6-for-6 shooting from the field, with five 3-pointers. She led the WNBA in 3-point field goals per 40 minutes (4.7).
Hodges' twin sister, Doneeka, played briefly with the Fever at the end of the 2008 campaign.
Acquired by Indiana as a free agent prior to the 2011 season, Smith averaged 7.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists in her lone season with the Fever. She started 33 of 34 games, starting in 32 and becoming the fourth player in league history with 2,000 field goals. A graduate of the University of Iowa and a former Big Ten Conference Player of the Year, Smith currently ranks eighth in WNBA history in total points, seventh in rebounds and fourth in blocked shots.
A WNBA playoff participant in seven straight seasons and eight times since 2002, the Indiana Fever has advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals three times in the past five years. The Fever opens its 2012 season by hosting the Atlanta Dream at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, May 19 (7:00 p.m.), in a rematch of last year's conference finals.
