SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Silver Stars have signed WNBA veteran Tangela Smith, head coach and general manager Dan Hughes announced today. The Silver Stars acquire Smith from the Indiana Fever in exchange for guard Roneeka Hodges. As per team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are pleased to be able to acquire Tangela," Hughes said. "She is one of the best 3-point shot makers the WNBA has seen. She also brings rebounding length and great versatility to our team. We want to thank Roneeka for all she did for the Silver Stars during her two seasons and wish her well."

A 6-3 center, Smith is the WNBA all-time leader in games played (448) while ranking fourth all-time in career blocks (554), seventh in rebounds (2,318) and eighth in scoring (5,011). She has averaged 11.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 1.2 blocks and 1.0 steals per game through 448 career contests. Originally selected by the Sacramento Monarchs in the second round (12th overall) of the 1998 WNBA Draft, Smith's career has included stints with the Charlotte Sting (2005-06), the Phoenix Mercury (2007-10) and the Indiana Fever.

"I thank God for this wonderful opportunity to join the San Antonio Silver Stars," Smith said. "I'm excited to be a part of an amazing organization and I'm very anxious for the season to get started. This is truly a blessing"

A 2006 WNBA All-Star, Smith made 32 starts for the Fever last season, averaging 7.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. She became the fourth player in WNBA history to notch 2,000 made field goals in 2011 and has played in every game in nine of the past 12 seasons.

A native of Chicago, Illinois, Smith is currently playing with Turkey's Tarsus Belediyesi where she averages 16.6 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 blocks per game through 17 games. She has also played professionally in Italy, Israel, China, Poland, Russia and Korea.

Smith graduated from the University of Iowa in 1998 after leading the Hawkeyes to conference championships in 1996 and 1998 and a Big Ten tournament title in 1997. A three-time All-Big Ten selection and the 1998 Big Ten Player of the Year, Smith averaged 13.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting 51.0 percent from the field through 116 career games.

Hodges joined the Silver Stars as a free agent on Feb. 19, 2010. She played in 28 regular-season games with five starts last season, averaging 3.9 points, 1.3 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game while leading the WNBA in 3-point field goals per 40 minutes (4.7).

The Silver Stars open the 2012 season on May 19 at Tulsa before tipping off the home schedule against the Chicago Sky on May 30 at 7 p.m. Ticket plans for the 2012 season start at $180 and are available online at SASilverStars.com or by calling (210) 444-5090.
