Charlotte Independence News Release
Indianapolis (IN) - The Charlotte Independence fell to Indy Eleven 2-1 at Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday night. In the 77th minute, Indy midfielder Carlyle Mitchell headed in the game-winner off an Ayoze corner kick.
In an evenly played first half, neither team was able to record any goals on multiple chances. The Independence broke the scoreless game in the 50th minute when defender Sam Vines pulled away from the Indy defense and picked out Jorge Herrera for his 3rd goal in as many games. Pending other results around the league, Herrera is now tied for the USL Golden Boot race with 9 goals on the season.
The remainder of the half was not kind to the Independence. Indy Eleven forward Ben Speas found the back of the net for his first goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Off of an Indy corner kick, Carlyle Mitchell scored a second goal for the home side in the 70th minute. Independence defender Bilal Duckett was set off for a second yellow card in the 77th minute, resulting in the Jacks finishing the game with 10 men.
Duckett will miss the Independence's next game this Wednesday as the team returns home to take on Nashville SC at the Sportsplex at Matthews. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET.
