Frederick Keys News Release

With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the tarp was pulled onto the field at Harry Grove Stadium and never came off. At the time of the down pour, the Keys led the Potomac Nationals, 5-1. Due to the rain that was expected in Frederick throughout the remainder of the night, the game was called and the Keys were the victors of game one of the Northern Division Championship Series.

LHP Jake Pettit got the nod for Frederick in game one of the NDCS. In 10 starts with the Keys in the regular season, Pettit went 7-0 with an ERA of 1.62. After retiring the first four batters of the game, 1B Steven Souza took Pettit deep to left. The Souza home run, however, was the lone run Pettit would allow all night.

Trailing by a run, the Keys put together some offense in the fourth inning. With two on and one out, RF Jacob Julius hit a groundball right at 2B Jeff Kobernus. In an attempt to turn a double play, Kobernus bobbled the ball and was only able to get the force out at second. Miguel Abreu made the P-Nats pay. Abreu lined a Demny pitch down the left field line for a three-run homer. C Brian Ward followed up Abreu with a solo shot to left-center. The back-to-back jacks put Frederick in front 4-1 after four innings.

Miguel Abreu drove in another run in the sixth inning to put the Keys ahead by four runs. Later in the sixth, the skies opened up. With the bases loaded and two down, the umpire crew called for the tarp. Following a 45-minute delay, the game was ruled official and the Keys were victorious.

Jake Pettit picked up the win on the night after he allowed one run on three hits over six innings of work. Paul Demny got the loss for Potomac.

Game two of the Northern Division Championship Series will take place on Thursday night at Harry Grove Stadium. LHP Rick Zagone will start for the Keys while the Nationals will turn to RHP Paul Demny. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
