Published on April 7, 2010 under International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release
ROCHESTER, MI--- The International Hockey League (IHL) announced Wednesday that the Quad City Mallards have been named the 2009-10 IHL Member Club of the Year as selected by the league's Board of Governors. The IHL Member Club of the Year is determined by the team's overall success both on and off the ice.
Off the ice, the Mallards teamed up with many local charities to help out the Quad City communities. Players joined the Salvation Army for their Red Kettle Campaign by acting as bell ringers during the holiday season. Also during the holidays, the Mallards joined forces with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and held a Teddy Bear Toss night to benefit Quad Cities Toys for Tots.
The Mallards teamed up with one of their local media outlets, the Quad-City Times, to launch the Mallards Junior Reporter program. The program is geared to give young fans the chance to get an up-close look at the Mallards and write about the team for their website. The program is open to area elementary, junior high and high school students.
Quad City held their 15th annual Jersey Auction to benefit Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House on March 20th, auctioning off their special edition black third jerseys after the game. The team raised $27,175 for the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, with the highest bid at $4,000 for goaltender Jerad Kaufmann's sweater. Over the last 15 years, the Mallard jersey auctions have raised over $600,000 to benefit local charities.
On the ice, the Mallards are still in contention for the fourth and final playoff spot, with just under two weeks to go in the regular season. Backstopped by two rookie netminders in Kyle Jones and Jerad Kaufmann, the Mallards continue to fight to earn their place in the playoffs.
Head coach Frank Anzalone and the Mallard squad have put together a 19-11-1-4 record at the iWireless Center, playing some of their best hockey on home ice. They have the league's second highest attendance, gathering over 140,958 people in 35 games for an average of 4,027 people so far this season, with three home games remaining on the regular season.
