San Antonio Iguanas News Release
San Antonio and Austin to Meet in the First Round
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS...The San Antonio Iguanas will begin their drive for the President's Cup on Friday night in Freeman Coliseum versus the Austin Ice Bats. The Southeast Division rivals will compete in a first round best-of-five series that will see Austin host three games and the Iguanas two games.
"We are very excited to get the playoffs started," said Iguanas Head Coach Chris Stewart. "This is what you prepare for beginning way back in the off-season and now it is finally here and I have complete confidence that our team will perform the way they are capable of."
In a non-conventional schedule for most best of five series', the Iguanas will begin on home ice despite the fact they do not have a better record than the Ice Bats and are not as high a seed. Games one and four (if necessary) will be in Freeman Coliseum, while games two, three and five (if necessary) will be in the Travis County Expo Center in Austin.
The Iguanas and Ice Bats are no strangers playing in the same division and squaring off 10 times during the regular season. Austin took the measure of the Iggys winning four times in regulation and three times in overtime. San Antonio was just 1-2-2 on home ice versus the Bats.
The league's leading scorer Dan Price (97 points on the season) accumulated nearly a fifth of his total points in the meetings with the Iguanas. In the 10 games played, Price finished with 10 goals and 10 assists and had four of the Bats seven game winning goals against the Iguanas.
"Austin is an extremely talented club and have many offensive weapons," said Stewart. "If you get looking too closely at one guy then someone else has the capability to come up and hurt you."
Tickets for the playoffs are on sale and begin as low as $10.50. Call 227-IGGY for more information.
