Detroit Ignition News Release


(Southfield, Mich., November 20, 2006) - The Detroit Ignition (2-2) travels to Chicago on Saturday, December 2 to take on the Chicago Storm (2-1) at 2:00 pm ET and returns home to battle the California Cougars (2-1) on Sunday, December 3 at Compuware Sports in Plymouth, MI. Kick-off for Sunday, December 3, is slated for 4:35 pm ET. The Ignition hopes to bounce back from a season-high, two-game, losing streak with the expansion club's first back-to-back game schedule of the 2006-07 regular season.

Last Weekend's Action

KiXX 12, IGNITION 10 OT (11-19-06) - The Detroit Ignition registered its first-ever home loss, 12-10, against the visiting Philadelphia KiXX in front of 3,566 at Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth, MI on Sunday. Midfielder Tony Donatelli registered the game-winning goal for the Blast, a two-pointer, 8:56 into the first overtime period. MISL Goalkeeper of the Week Sanaldo took the loss for Detroit, stopping 13 of the 19 shots that he faced. The KiXX took the lead early with a two-point goal, the only score of the opening frame of play, off the foot of midfielder Andy Guastaferro at 4:33, to give Philadelphia the 2-0 advantage. Detroit responded late in the second quarter with a two-point goal from forward Jamar Beasley off a pass from Carlos Farias at 11:35, evening the score at 2-2. KiXX midfielder Ptah Myers put the KiXX back in control with a two-point goal at 14:36 to give Philadelphia the 4-2 lead at halftime. The Ignition struck first in the third frame of play with another two-point goal from Beasley off the pass from Carlos Farias at 11:37, tying the game at 4-4. D'Ambra responded with two-point goal of his own to put Philadelphia back in control with a 6-4 KiXX lead at 10:13. Ignition defender Jonathan Greenfield evened the score 6-6 with a power play goal at 7:54 with an assist going to midfielder Miodrag Djerisilo. Carlos Farias started the fourth quarter's scoring with a two-point goal sneaking a shot just over KiXX goalkeeper Peter Pappas at 4:19 to give Detroit the 8-6 advantage. Ignition Captain Novi Marojevic buried a shot into the back of the net at 5:24 off a pass from forward Mike Apple, his first point of the season, to give Detroit a 10-6 lead. KiXX midfielder Andy Guastaferro cut the Ignition lead to 10-8 with an unassisted goal at 8:16. KiXX forward Shawn Boney tied the game 10-10 with a two-point goal at 13:20 to send the contest into overtime. At 8:56 of the first overtime period, KiXX midfielder Tony Donatelli put one in the net off a pass from defender Drew Kopp to give Philadelphia the 12-0 victory over the Ignition.

BLAST 11, IGNITION 5 (11-17-06) - Baltimore struck first with a two-point goal from defender P.J. Wakefield off a pass from Machel Millwood to take a 2-0 lead at 4:28 of the opening frame. Veteran forward David Bascome extended the Blast lead to 4-0 at 9:57 by burying a two-point goal off a pass off the wall from Millwood, who tallied his second assist on the night. Ignition forward Hewerton responded quickly, beating Blast goalkeeper Sagu for his first two-point goal of the season at 10:18 to cut the Baltimore lead to 4-2. Less than a minute later (11:02) a tripping call near the goal gave Blast midfielder Denison Cabral the chance to capitalize on a shootout goal and further the Baltimore lead to 6-2 at the end of the first quarter. Jamar Beasley brought the Ignition to within one, with the only goal of the second frame, putting a long three-point goal into the upper corner to cut the Blast lead to just 6-5 at halftime. Following a scoreless third quarter, the Blast extended their lead to 8-5 with a two-point goal off the left foot of Millwood, his fourth point of the night, 4:12 into the final frame of play. An empty net three-point goal by Robbie Aristodemo at 13:35 gave the Blast the 11-5 victory and tallied the first loss of the season for the Detroit Ignition.

Next Week

The Saturday, December 2, meeting with the Chicago Storm marks the two club's first head-to-head contest and first of six matches during the 2006-07 season. The Storm held off the California Cougars 15-14 in front of 5,165 at the club's first home game at the state-of-the-art Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, IL. Chicago has been carried by the play of their special teams which currently lead the League in power play and penalty kill percentages.

When the California Cougars head to Compuware Sports Arena on Sunday, December 3, it will be a matchup between the Major Indoor Soccer League's two newest member clubs. The Cougars, in their second season, have started the year with a 2-1 record after going 10-20 (.333) in the 2005-06 campaign and look to continue that streak as the head into next week's match with the Ignition. The first 2000 fans to attend the first-ever matchup between these two young franchises will receive an Ignition water bottle courtesy of the Henry Ford Medical Group, the Official Team Physicians of the Detroit Ignition.
