Ignition secures playoff berth in win over Cougars

(Southfield, Mich., March 23, 2007) - The Detroit Ignition (17-10) defeated the California Cougars (6-22), 17-8, in front of a sellout crowd at Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth, MI on Friday to secure the first-year club a playoff berth in the 2006-07 MISL Postseason. The game-winning goal, a two-pointer, was registered by League-leading scorer Jamar Beasley at the 6:22 mark of the third quarter play. Beasley led all Ignition scorers with six points on the night, including point number 100 of the season. Detroit will head to California tomorrow for the second half of the club's final home-and-home series of the season. Game-time at Stockton Arena is slated for 9:00 pm ET.

Hewerton began the night's scoring with a two-point goal to hand the Ignition the early 2-0 advantage at 2:17 of the opening frame of play. Detroit defender Jonathan Greenfield registered the club's second shorthanded goal of the season, a two-pointer off a pass from Droo Callahan to give the Ignition the 4-0 lead at 7:45. Greenfield tallied his second goal of the night, another two-pointer at 9:34 as the Detroit lead spread to 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The second frame began with a two-point goal from Ricardinho at 4:44, extending the Ignition advantage to 8-0. California midfielder Brian Farber put the Cougars on the board for the first time of the night with a two-pointer at 10:05 but Detroit stayed out front with an 8-2 lead. Cougars midfielder Craig Scheer brought the Ignition's lead down to 8-4 with a two-point goal at 11:12 at the end of the second quarter.

The third quarter began with a two-point goal just 59 seconds in by Farber, his second of the game, as the Ignition lead fell to just 8-6. League0leading scorer Jamar Beasley registered a two-point, power play goal for the Ignition at 6:22 as the Detroit advantage was extended to 10-6. Carlos Farias scored his sixteenth goal of the season, a two-pointer past Cougars netminder Bayard Elfvin as the first-year club moved its lead to 12-6. Jamar Beasley was credited with a three-point goal at 14:40 for his 100th point of the season as Detroit's lead moved to 15-6 at the end of three.

Ignition defender Josh Rife buried a two-point goal into the back of the net at 7:34 of the fourth quarter as the club furthered its lead to 17-6. Off a rebounded shot by Antonio Sutton, Brian Farber buried an incredible bicycle kick for two points past Ignition netminder Danny Waltman as Detroit clinched a playoff berth in its first season with a 17-8 victory.

Ignition goalkeeper Danny Waltman (4-1) minded the net and earned the victory for the Ignition...Forward Jamar Beasley registered six points consisting of one three-point goal, one two-point goal, and an assist...With the win, Detroit clinches a playoff berth in its inaugural campaign...It was announced Friday that due to the tremendous response of the fans of southeast Michigan, the MISL Championship will be played at Compuware Sports Arena on Saturday, April 21 at 4:00 pm ET.
