IFL Debuts Pink Whistles
March 24, 2009 - Indoor Football League (IFL) News Release
Richmond, Virginia: The Indoor Football League (IFL) opened play for the 2009 season over the past two weekends providing heart pumping finishes, fabulous catches, and powerful hits. The games also featured a rare sight on the field with game officials sporting pink whistles. The whistles are used to bring awareness to breast cancer and will be used in all IFL games during the 2009 season. The idea was the brainchild of Wichita Wild owner Wink Hartman who got the idea as he was getting dressed one morning. "I wanted to think of something unique that would raise awareness all season long. I had a pink shirt in my closet and the idea was born", Hartman says.
IFL owners voted unanimously to accept the proposal and whistles were ordered. Each IFL team also committed to a partnership with their local Susan G Komen for the Cure Affiliate office. Teams will promote breast cancer awareness at their home games in an effort to educate our female fans. IFL Commissioner Tommy Benizio says, "Women make up nearly half of our fan base and we want to reach out and help where we can with such a serious problem. The experts with Komen for the Cure will provide the education and resources to women, we are just the vehicle and we hope to target an audience that may have not been targeted before."
"We are always looking for new ways to educate women and their families about the life saving message of early detection." said Teresa Carter, President of the Mid-Kansas Affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure® located in Wichita, Ks. "We are very excited about this new opportunity to talk about early detection and Wink's idea of putting pink whistles on all the officials' league wide was very creative." This will be the Mid-Kansas Affiliate's second partnership with the Wichita Wild.
