Yuma Scorpions News Release

The Yuma Scorpions ran into a hot pitcher when they faced the Heroes of the Diamond Military All-Stars on Monday night.

Twenty-three year old Tony Perez from Brea, California handcuffed the Scorpions over six innings leading his team to a 4-3 win over the Golden Baseball League squad.

Scorps Field Manager Darryl Brinkley must have like what he saw because after the game he signed the 6'1" right hander.

Perez, a two year starter at Lambuth University in Jackson, Tennessee, joined the Scorpions on Tuesday afternoon as they finalized their opening day roster.

Brinkley will keep 11 pitchers and 11 position players to start the season against the defending champion Calgary Vipers on Wednesday night at Desert Sun Stadium.

Pitching coach Bill Pulsipher will get the ball on opening night. The veteran of six seasons of major league ball has another big league arm in the rotation. Korean Cha-Seung Baek who started 20 games for the San Diego Padres in 2008 is also on the roster. Two of the Scorpion pitchers have triple-A experience, right hander Daryl Arreola and lefty Gilbert De La Vara.

Offensively the Scorpions are led by former Minnesota Twins shortstop Alex Prieto. Triple-A center fielder Javier Herrera and Double-A veterans Santo DeLeon and Lee Cruz give Brinkley three more experienced players.
