Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

The Baltimore Orioles have announced the managers, coaches and instructors for their minor league affiliates for the 2006 season. Most of the staff will remain the same as in 2005, including the managers at each of the top five affiliates: DAVE TREMBLEY at AAA Ottawa, DON WERNER at AA Bowie, BIEN FIGUEROA at Class A Frederick, GARY KENDALL at Class A Delmarva and ANDY ETCHEBARREN at Short-A Aberdeen. Although several coaches will move to new positions within the organization, there are only two new members from outside the organization joining the minor league system. Four positions will be announced at a later date.

"I said last year that I believed we had our best staff from top to bottom in my 12 years in the Orioles organization, and I believe the team records and the individual development by our players showed that," said Orioles Director of Minor League Operations DAVID STOCKSTILL. "We have tweaked a few positions but remain mostly unchanged because we feel the assignments best suit the staff as well as the players in the system. We look for the continued development of the minor league teams to provide major league-ready players."

The staffs at Class A Delmarva will return virtually intact. Baltimore native GARY KENDALL returns to manage Delmarva after guiding the Shorebirds to a 72-67 record and first place in the South Atlantic League's North Division before losing in the playoffs. A 1981 graduate of Sparrows Point High School, Kendall returned to the organization in 2000 as a coach and made his managerial debut in 2004 at Bluefield. He served as a part-time scout for the Orioles 1991-95.

KENNIE STEENSTRA will begin his 2nd season as pitching coach at Delmarva. He began his pro coaching career at independent Lincoln in the Northern League in 2004 after 11-year pro career that included 4 games with the Chicago Cubs in 1998. KIMERA BARTEE, who joined the organization as a coach last year at Delmarva, returns for a 2nd season as well. Bartee, an Orioles farmhand for three years after being drafted in 1993, played parts of 6 seasons in the majors before retiring as a player following the 2004 season.

JOE BENGE, a graduate of Baltimore's Calvert Hall College High School, returns for his 3rd season as trainer at Delmarva and his 6th full season in the Orioles' system. STEVE MECCIA, strength and conditioning coach at Aberdeen last season, his first in the Orioles organization, moves to Delmarva in 2006.
