Idaho Stampede's Dickens called up to New Jersey Nets

December 8, 2004 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release

Boise, ID (December 8, 2004) — Idaho Stampede forward Kaniel Dickens has signed with the NBA's New Jersey Nets it was announced Wednesday by the Continental Basketball Association League Office and Nets Team President Rod Thorn. The signing marks the third CBA-to-NBA call-up of the season, and is the second for the Idaho Stampede, who also sent Britton Johnsen to the Indiana Pacers on November 24.

"The CBA has been a great forum for players such as Britton Johnsen and Kaniel Dickens to increase their exposure to NBA scouts, coaches, and management," stated Dickens' player representative Brad Ames of Mark Bartlestein's Chicago-based agency Priority Sports. "Having the opportunity to showcase their abilities in a respected and well-coached league definitely gives NBA decision-makers an opportunity to evaluate the players thoroughly, which results in the players having a great chance of being called up when openings arise."

Dickens was leading the CBA in scoring at 29.4 points per game in five games played (all starts) for the Stampede. He also averaged 9.6 rebounds per contest (5th in the league), while shooting 54.6 percent (53 of 97) from the floor, and led the league in three-point field goal percentage at 57.1 percent (20 of 35).

"We are pleased to add Kaniel to our roster," said Thorn, in a Nets team release. "He is a versatile player who has the ability to shoot the basketball, adding depth to our bench."

The University of Idaho alum was a second-round selection (50th overall) of the Utah Jazz in the 2000 NBA Draft, and was a fifth-round selection (42nd overall) of the Stampede in the 2000 CBA College Draft. Last season, as a member of the Dakota Wizards, Dickens averaged 19.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as he helped lead the Wizards to their second CBA Title. He also received 2004 CBA All-League First Team member honors, was a 2004 CBA All-Star selection, and was the 2004 All-Star Slam Dunk Champion.

Dickens is filling a roster spot left open when the Nets placed forward Awvee Storey on waivers.
