Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
RIO RANCHO, NM - On the road for their third of seven consecutive games, the Corpus Christi IceRays picked up their first true road victory as they knocked off the New Mexico Mustangs, 2-1, at the Santa Ana Star Center on Thursday night. With the win, the IceRays improve to 8-11-2 (18 Points) while the Mustangs fall to 5-15-2 (12 Points) with the loss.
Terry Porta scored his first goal of the season, Josh Munford tallied the game-winner, and Pheonix Copley made 30 stops as the Rays ended a three-game losing skid.
Corpus Christi fell behind in the first period at the 6:48 mark when Mustangs' forward Evan Johnston (5) beat Copley to put New Mexico ahead, 1-0. The IceRays responded, 11:17 into the period, when Portra (1) at the end of a line shift, walked to the top of the right-wing circle and snapped a highlight reel wrist-shot past Matt Madore to tie the game at 1-1. Captain Ben Hughes assisted on the tally. The score stayed tied through twenty minutes with the Mustangs outshooting the IceRays, 14-8.
In the second period, it was the Corpus Christi fourth line providing the offensive spark. At the 7:38 mark, a hard-working forecheck from Sam Cheraso freed the puck up for Munford (2) who beat Madore to put the IceRays ahead, 2-1. Cheraso assist ended a nine-game pointless drought. Tyler Parker also assisted on the goal, his first point in ten games with Corpus Christi. Shots were 12-10 in favor of the Mustangs as the scored remained 2-1 after two periods of play.
New Mexico looked for some momentum through a fight, but Munford got the better of Kalin Paul in a very evenly-matched heavyweight fight. It was the IceRays hanging on from there as they sealed the 2-1 victory over the Mustangs. Final shots were 31-20 in favor of New Mexico.
The Ryan Holt three stars of the game:
