Moline, Ill.- Three unanswered goals vaulted the Rockford IceHogs to a 3-2 win over the rival Quad City Mallards at the MARK of the Quad Cities on Wednesday night. Rockford ran their unbeaten streak on the road to 10 games (9-0-1) and are now unbeaten in four straight overall (3-0-1).
The Mallards controlled the first period and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Quad City winger Rafal Martynowski wrapped a rebound around IceHogs goalie Michel Robinson 3:42 into the contest, giving the Mallards the 1-0 advantage. Then, at 5:04 of the first, center J.J. Wrobel knocked home a maker through traffic for the 2-0 advantage. The IceHogs cut the lead in half, with their first shot on goal of the contest, after winger Jason Ralph shot in his 10th goal of the season at 8:41.
After getting outshot 14-3 in the opening frame, Rockford regained its composure and took control in the second period. While shorthanded, rookie center Steve Yetman was given credit for a goal when defenseman Samy Nasreddine's pass deflected off goalie Jason Tapp and into the Mallards net at 5:28 of the second to tie the game at 2-2.
Later in the second, rookie defenseman Dan Boeser gave the IceHogs its first lead of the evening, beating Tapp on a 3-on-2 breakaway at 13:55. Winger Olivier Proulx set up the Boeser and Ralph markers. Rockford would go on to outshoot the Mallards 28-14 in the final two periods and 31-28 in the game.
Robinson shook off a shaky start to earn the win making 26 saves. Robinson also extended his club record winning streak to 10 straight games and his club record unbeaten streak to 15 (13-0-2). The IceHogs had its club record 12 straight games with a power play goal come to an end, finishing the night 0-for-4 on the advantage.
Next Home Game: Thursday, Feb. 23 vs. Port Huron Flags. Game time is 7:05 p.m. This game was rescheduled from Friday, Feb. 24 to accommodate a concert at the MetroCentre.
Saturday, Feb. 25 vs. Quad City Mallards. The duel starts at 7:05 p.m. The arch-rivals return to Rockford to battle the IceHogs. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive an IceHogs Sports Bag from Members Alliance Credit Union, B103 FM and 23WIFR. Doors will open at a special early time of 4 p.m.
