UHL cross-checks colon cancer
February 23, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) News Release
LAKE ST. LOUIS, MO--- The United Hockey League (UHL) and The Colon Club are teaming up this March for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. As a part of this initiative, Molly McMaster will sign a contract with each UHL team and participate in one game in every UHL city, beginning with the Adirondack Frostbite on Sunday, February 26th.
Molly McMaster is the President and Co-Founder of The Colon Club, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to education and awareness of the disease. McMaster was diagnosed with stage II colon cancer on February 19, 1999, her 23rd birthday.
"Colorectal cancer can happen to anyone at any time and I am determined to prove that to everyone who will listen," stated McMaster. "I'm definitely looking forward to playing hockey and getting my message out to a whole new crowd."
"This is an opportunity for the UHL to make a huge difference in educating people about this disease," stated Richard Brosal, UHL President/CEO. "We want to fill the arenas when Molly plays, but more importantly, our goal is to send a life-saving message to as many fans as possible."
The partnership between The Colon Club and the UHL is made possible by the generosity of Fleet Laboratories. In addition to McMaster participating in each game, Fleet will provide activities and giveaways during the promotional nights. Fleet's mascot, EneMan, will also be appearing at the games. UHL players will wear a special patch on their jerseys throughout the month. The patch has a blue star, the universal symbol for colorectal cancer.
