Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill.- Rockford IceHogs Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Steve Martinson announced the Hogs 2005-06 Opening Day roster on Thursday. Martinson also announced that IceHogs defenseman Nathan Lutz was loaned to the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and defenseman Evgueni Nourislamov was sent back to Rockford.
The IceHogs roster for the club's first game on Friday against the Elmira Jackals includes seven rookies, two veterans and nine returning players from last season's squad that reached the Colonial Cup Semifinals. Hogs goalie Michel Robinson will also remain in Milwaukee for the Hogs opening weekend.
The only two veterans on the IceHogs roster are forwards Vince Malts and Bruce Watson. Other forwards on the '05-06 roster include Greg Barber, Robin Big Snake, Chaz Johnson, Alex Kim, Preston Mizzi, Jason Notermann, Olivier Proulx, Jason Ralph, Yannick Tifu, and Steve Yetman.
On defense, Rockford will feature Ryan Carrigan, Matt Gens, Corey Hessler, Lutz, Nourislamov and Steve Pelletier. The goaltenders tomorrow night will be Andrew Joy and Ronnie Vogel. Rockford's seven rookies are Big Snake, Carrigan, Gens, Johnson, Tifu, Yetman and Joy.
For Lutz, the call-up is his second of the season already and Rockford's fourth overall. The Hogs top defenseman each of the past two seasons was called-up by the Manitoba Moose, whom he went to training camp with. The Moose released Lutz from his training camp contract last week, allowing the blue liner to receive a promotion from the Admirals.
"To compete in a luxury tax league, you can spend, spend wisely, or give players a reason to play other then just money," said Martinson. "With having loaned two of our UHL First Team All-Stars to the AHL, obviously our reason is opportunity. There isn't a better place in any league, that a free agent can get a chance to play in the AHL."
This is also the third straight season in which Lutz will suit up for Milwaukee. Lutz was a member of the 2003-04 Calder Cup Championship club and played in one game last year with the Admirals. Lutz has skated in a total of 43 career AHL contests.
Opening Night: Friday, October 21 vs. Elmira Jackals. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The IceHogs open their seventh season on Friday against the Jackals. The first 5,000 fans to the game will receive a 2005-06 IceHogs Magnet Schedule courtesy of FatWallet.com and WTVO Channel 17.
