Icehawks Head Into Light, Two Game Holiday Week

December 21, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks saw their overall winning streak snapped last week, but kept their home winning streak alive with a pair of wins at McMorran Arena. The Icehawks (18-7-0-1) finished the week 2-1-0-0 and fell to second place in the International Hockey League standings with 37 points, just two points behind the first place Muskegon Lumberjacks.

Port Huron will take on Flint and Dayton again this week, making it two weeks since they have played anyone but the Generals and Gems. The team travels to Flint for a game on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and will then take a Christmas break before playing the Gems at McMorran Arena for the second straight Sunday at 5 p.m. Dayton and Flint are the two teams the Icehawks have enjoyed the most success against this season. After last week's games, the Icehawks are now 5-0 versus Dayton and 5-1 versus Flint.

The Icehawks entered last week riding both an overall winning streak and a home winning streak and extended both to six games with a 6-1 win on Tuesday versus Flint. The same Generals snapped Port Huron's overall streak on Friday, as the Icehawks fell 6-3 at Perani Arena.

The Icehawks rebounded on Sunday and defeated the Gems 5-2 for their seventh consecutive home win. Port Huron fans have not witnessed a home loss in six weeks, with the last coming on November 11 versus Muskegon. Goalie Larry Sterling got the win in both home games to boost his personal win streak to four games.

Extra-Special Teams: Despite allowing a pair of power play goals in a 6-3 loss to Flint Friday, the Icehawks continue to have the league's best penalty killing unit. The team has held opponents to just 11 goals in 110 advantages. Every other IHL team has allowed at least twice as many power play goals. The Icehawks also scored four power play goals of their own this week and their 25 total power play goals this season lead the IHL.

Keeping It Clean: Much of Port Huron's success this year is due to the fact that they have been able to stay out of the penalty box. In Tuesday's victory over Flint, the Icehawks managed to play the entire game without being whistled for a single penalty. Port Huron has only had to kill 110 advantages this season. Only Quad City has spent less time killing penalties, although they have played three fewer games than the Icehawks.
