IceGators Win on Road at Pensacola

LAFAYETTE, LA - The Louisiana IceGators (11-34) hit the road to take on the Pensacola Ice Flyers (23-18). The 'Gators faced off against the Ice Flyers Friday night and won 5-4 in overtime after scoring with 12 seconds left in the game. Louisiana defeated the Ice Flyers again on Sunday 4-1.

The first period began with each team trying to figure each other out. Both teams combined for five shots on goal, four of them by the 'Gators, in the first five minutes. Louisiana was able to strike first with 11:59 left in the game. Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn (LOU) scored with help from Robert Short (LOU) and Tobias Karlsson (LOU). This was Versteeg-Lytwyn's fourth goal since joining the IceGators. The 'Gators kept the pressure on the Ice Flyers, out shooting Pensacola 12-6 in the period.

The second period was a period full of penalties. With 16:49 remaining in the period Tyler Barr (PEN) and Marc Rechlicz (LOU) were called for Fighting. Twelve seconds later Matt Whitehead (PEN) was called for tripping and a minute later Tanner Shultz (PEN) was called for an illegal check to the head, which got him a major and a game misconduct. While on the power play C.J. Tozzo scored his eighth goal of the season and put the IceGators up 2-0. After the goal, Barr, Tyler Lyon (PEN), Rechlicz, and Dennis Sicard (LOU) were all penalized. Once the two teams returned to playing hockey, Louisiana's Beau McLaughlin (LOU) scored his 29th goal of the season. Thirty seconds later Tozzo scored his second goal of the period and put the 'Gators up 4-0.

The third period began with the IceGators looking to hold on to the 4-0 lead. Pensacola's offense put continual pressure on the IceGators' goalkeeper, Mike Brown. The Ice Flyers outshot the 'Gators 10-2 in the period but was only able to capitalize once. With 10:28 left in the game, Evan Schafer (PEN) scored his first goal of the season. However, the IceGators were able to hold on for the 4-1 victory.

"The other day we had to fight to come from behind to beat Pensacola but today we started fast," replied IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski after beating the Pensacola. "Our guys are starting to believe in themselves and we are just looking to cause some havoc for the rest of the league in the final few weeks."
