LAFAYETTE, LA The Louisiana IceGators (12-34) entered their game Wednesday night on a two game winning streak. Each of the victories came over the Pensacola Ice Flyers. On Wednesday the IceGators took on the top team in the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), the Mississippi Surge (26-15) and won in a shootout 5-4.
The first period began slowly with each team trying to figure each other out. However, the IceGators were able to strike first. Dennis Sicard (LOU) scored his 11th goal and put the Gators up 1-0. Seven minutes later Mississippi tied the game at 1-1 when Jason Cassells (MIS) scored. More than a minute later, Jeff Winchester (MIS) scored a power play goal putting the Surge up 2-1. The overtime period began with the Gators on the attack getting the first four shots on goal but couldn t capitalize on any of them. The Surge then had the final three shots of the period all turned away. The game went to a shootout and Versteeg-Lytwyn went first for the Gators and scored. Jason Hill (LOU) went after two missed chances for the Surge and scored to put the Gators up 2-0 in the shootout. Winchester then cut the shootout lead in half when he scored. The final two shooters from either team were unable to score and gave the Gators a 5-4 win in overtime.
This was a well played game, replied IceGators Head Coach Kevin Kaminski after beating the Mississippi Surge. The guys never got down on themselves and never gave up, even after the Surge tied the game. We have to keep building on this and keep playing well.
