Louisiana IceGators News Release
LAFAYETTE, LA - The IceGators came into Friday night's game after losing five in a row. All of the loses were by one goal. One of those five were against the Huntsville Havoc, the team the IceGators took to the ice to take on Friday night. This game had very different result though as the IceGators capitalized on a stellar effort by the goalkeeper Scott Darling (LOU) in order to get the victory in a shootout, 2-1.
The opening period opened quickly with the Havoc getting the first three shots on goal. But then the IceGators came back just as fast with the next five shots on goal Each goalkeeper, Darling and Mark Sibbald (HUN) were able to keep both teams off of the board during the opening period. At the end of the first period the 'Gators and Havoc were tied at zero.
The second period was much different than the first. The period began with Mike Selitto (LOU) being called for a tripping minor, which put the Havoc on a power play. Less than 30 seconds later Stephen Margeson (HUN) scored his 15th goal of the season and putting the Havoc up 1-0. Louisiana answered when Dennis Sicard (LOU), a former Havoc player, scored a goal with assists to Shawn McNeil and Cameron Sault tying the game at 1-1 at the end of the period.
The third period was a slow developing period. During the period the IceGators out shot the Havoc 6-3 with minimal chances at good goals. The first was when Kirill Kitsyn (LOU) had a shot on goal and Beau McLaughlin (LOU) had a rebound attempt but Sibbald was able to handle the puck and not allow a goal. The other attempt was on a one-timer from Kitsyn that was stopped.
The game headed to a five minute overtime period where neither team made a mistake. The 'Gators were able to kill a hooking penalty awarded to Dean Moore (LOU) with 2:10 remaining to send the game to shootouts. Shawn McNeil (LOU) opened the shootout by getting stopped. Ryan Fultz (LOU) was able to put the puck past Sibbald to give the IceGators a 1-0 advantage in the shootout. Following a Trevor Karasiewicz (LOU) attempt, Kyle Laughlin (HUN) was able to score, tying the shootout at 1-1. After Laughlin took his attempt, McLaughlin was able to score on his attempt; this goal put the IceGators up 2-1 in the shootout period. Darling was able to stop the next two attempts by Mike Carter (HUN) and Ryan Kretzer (HUN) to seal the victory for the IceGators.
"Tonight we were able to put everything together," answered a relieved IceGators' Head Coach Dave MacIsaac after the IceGators won in a shootout. "We had a great game plan and executed it perfectly. This is going to help build confidence as we return tomorrow to take on this same Havoc team."
Saturday night, the IceGators will be taking on the Havoc of Huntsville again but this time the IceGators will have a little help. The new head coach of the Lafayette Wildcatters, Rich Ingold will be the honorary coach of the IceGators. Ingold has the most victories in the arenafootball2 league and is a member of the af2 Hall of Fame. He will be on the bench during the game to help MacIsaac motivate the players to duplicate their efforts against the Havoc tomorrow night, December 4, at 7:05 in the Dome. Call (337) 704-4423 for great season ticket and mini package opportunities.
