Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks defeated the Knoxville Ice Bears 5-3 Friday night in Knoxville, TN. The RiverHawks used two-point nights from forwards Lucas LaBelle, Greg Holt, and Jason Weeks as well as a strong goaltending performance from Jordan McLaughlin to lift the team to victory.
The result gives the RiverHawks a winning record for the first time during their inaugural season, as they sit in fourth place in the Southern Professional Hockey League with eight wins and seven losses. They were able to move to within four points of the first-place Huntsville Havoc.
The first period was bookended with goals. The RiverHawks quieted the Knoxville crowd early as LaBelle scored just over a minute in, a lead that would remain intact until there were less than three minutes left in the when Ice Bears forward Mike Bulakwa evened the affair with a goal of his own.
The RiverHawks would manage to regain the lead in the second period as LaBelle would set up forward Egor Mironov for his fourth goal of the season.
The RiverHawks would quickly build on that lead in the third period with two goal goals. First, newly signed defenseman Drew Baker would tally one for the RiverHawks at the 1:29 mark of the final frame. Then Weeks and captain Matt Auffrey would set up Jason Price for his fourth goal of the season to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
Ice Bears forward Frank Furdero would make things interesting as he would score on the power play to narrow the lead to two goals. However, it would not be enough as Weeks would score into an empty net. The Ice Bears would manage to score once more in the final minute, but by that time the game had been decided.
For McLaughlin it was his four win in as many starts, as he stopped 25 of 28 shots the Ice Bears fired. He currently sits second in the SPHL in goals against average with a mark of 2.74.
The RiverHawks are back in action at the James Brown Arena Saturday, December 4th against the Columbus Cottonmouths. The puck drops at 7:30pm.
