Niagara IceDogs News Release
The "Dogs were back in action today with a matinee, in another important Central Division match-up, against the Battalion. When Niagara last faced the Battalion, on Thanksgiving weekend, North Bay was victorious. This weekend, the IceDogs want to change the score of the season series, and continue their 5-game point streak.
Although the Battalion opened the scoring early in the first period with a shorthanded marker, Phil Tomasino tied the game up with a big goal early in the first period. Tomasino cleaned up a mess in front of the Battalion net, by potting his 14th of the season. Then, just three minutes later, Andrew Bruder picked up his second point of the afternoon by scoring his 4th goal in six games. Showing off those soft hands, once again, Bruder banged away at a loose puck on the doorstep of the North Bay crease. For the third consecutive game, the IceDogs reached double digits in shots to open the first period, with twelve.
The Battalion tied the game up at 2 in the second period. The rebuilding 'Dogs played a much more defensive game in the second period, having to weather some of the battle plans of the Troops. Niagara added 9 shots in the middle frame.
Within the first minute of play in the third, the IceDogs peppered the Battalion goaltender with shots. Niagara ran into some penalty troubles nearing the midway point of the third period, which North Bay took advantage of. The Battalion added another goal at the midway point of the game to lead 4-2. Dealing with a deficit in the final minutes of play, the IceDogs pulled Tucker Tynan with three minutes to go. The high risk, high reward move paid off, as Jake Uberti scored his 6th goal of the season, fighting through traffic.Niagara continued to press, but they couldn't score one more goal to bring the game into overtime. The Battalion took the final game of the weekend 4-3.
The adversity faced in this game will prove to be a good learning curve for the IceDogs as their developing season progresses.
