Niagara IceDogs News Release
The Niagara IceDogs knocked off the hometown Generals by a 5-3 score Sunday night in Oshawa for their sixth straight win, moving them back into first place in the OHL's Eastern Conference.
The first period saw the goaltenders put on a solid showing as both teams would be held scoreless after twenty minutes. Shots in the period favoured Niagara 12-10.
The second period saw the offences break out as the teams would combine for five goals. Oshawa would take leads at both 1-0 and 2-1, but both times Andrew Agozzino would answer with powerplay goals for Niagara. Less than a minute after Agozzino tied it at 2-2, Steven Shipley would strike to give the IceDogs their first lead of the game, sending it into the second intermission at 3-2. Shots after 40 minutes favoured Niagara 30-16.
The third period would see Oshawa tie things back up at 3-3, before Brett Ritchie would break the deadlock with only 2:38 remaining to put the IceDogs ahead for good. Jamie Oleksiak would find the empty net with ten seconds remaining to make it a 5-3 final in favour of the visitors. Final shots were 50-25 for Niagara.
Mark Visentin picked up the win for Niagara, while Agozzino led the IceDogs charge with a pair of goals, and Dougie Hamilton contributed a pair of powerplay assists in his return from suspension. Ritchie's goal was his eighth in an IceDogs uniform and continued his clutch timing as it was his fourth game winner for the IceDogs in only 16 games since coming over from Sarnia prior to the trade deadline.
