March 23, 2018 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The IceDogs' 11th consecutive appearance in the OHL Playoffs is coming! Game One of the Eastern Conference Quarter-Final goes tonight at the Meridian Centre, against the Oshawa Generals. Despite having not faced each other since October, where the season series was split between teams, both teams finished their seasons with similar records. In the season series, each team won a game in extra minutes - an overtime win for the 'Dogs, and a shootout win for the Generals. Each team picked up the extra point on the road. In the two games played between these teams, Danial Singer scored two goals and finished with 4 points, while rookie Philip Tomasino had three assists, to lead the 'Dogs, while Kyle MacLean led Oshawa with one goal and two assists, 3 total points.
The 'Dogs got off to a hot start to the playoffs. Less than 10 minutes into the first period, a 4 on 4 Drew Hunter pinched down into a scoring position and was fed a beauty pass by Ben Jones to beat a sprawling Kyle Keyser. Hunter's first of the playoffs, assisted by Jonesy, was scored into an open net. As the first period wore on, the game continued to get more and more physical.
Despite weathering an early Generals storm, Sam Miletic squeaked a goal past Keyser to double the 'Dogs lead to 2! Milly's goal was assisted Danial Singer and Akil Thomas. On a shorthanded break nearing the end of the 2nd period, the Generals scored to cut the Niagara lead in half. The 2-1 score held heading into the third period.
The spirited play continued into the third period with each team getting strong chances. The 'Dogs strong 4 on 4 play continued into the final frame. While Kyle Langdon and Allan McShane sat for two midway through the period, the 'Dogs got to work. Sam Miletic and Akil Thomas pressed hard in the offensive, and Thomas sniped a shot from between the face off dots and beat Keyser to score his 1st of the post-season! Miletic and Elijah Roberts picked up the assists on Akil's goal. Just over a minute later, while still on a 4 on 4, Ben Jones went streaking into the zone alone after being set up by Kirill Maksimov. Jones' initial shot was stopped, but he picked up the rebound just infront of Keyser and squeezed it in five-hole. The Generals got one back on a powerplay to make it 4-2.
The 'Dogs held on to take this one by a score of 4-2! Niagara leads the series 1-0!
