Niagara IceDogs News Release
After picking up points in their last three games, the IceDogs were looking for a win against their opponent across the border, the Erie Otters. Tonight's IceDogs lineup looks slightly different than the two previous games against Erie this season, hoping to light a spark.
Your IceDogs came out ready to play. Adrien Beraldo set the tone in the IceDogs end throwing some big hits to give his rookie defense partner Isaac Enright time to make some smart defensive plays. All the 'Dogs needed was 18 seconds on the powerplay to get on the board. Phil Tomasino fumbled the puck his first shot but made no mistake on his second attempt to bury the puck from the slot and collect his team leading 12th goal on the season. Assists went to Ivan Lodnia and Andrew Bruder.
The IceDogs found themselves on the powerplay less than two minutes later and made it 2-0. Beraldo dished to Akil Thomas near the blueline and Thomas took the space the Otters gave him to walk in before dishing to Bruder beside the net. Bruder did a quick spin and shelved the puck top corner in one smooth move.
The scoring didn't stop there as the 'Dogs made it 3-0 2:32 later. Tomasino skated into the Otters end and tried to pass across to Jackson Doherty on the far side of the net. Doherty dropped the puck back to Kyen Sopa to shoot into a nearly open net. Sopa is now tied with Tomasino with 12 goals to lead the IceDogs.
The Otters picked up two quick ones to close the gap to 3-2. With less than a minute remaining in the period rookie defenseman Dakota Betts came in to defend veteran Tomasino which showed a lot of heart from the young player.
It was only 2:31 into the second, when Jake Uberti extended the IceDogs lead to 4-2. Lodnia out battled an Otters defenseman to gain possession of the puck and pass it off to Uberti for his fifth of the season. The secondary assist went to captain Thomas.
The Otters picked up their own powerplay marker closing the gap to one once again. The 'Dogs offence continued with rookie defenceman, Enright, jumping into the rush and getting off a quality scoring chance towards the end of the period. Rookie Lucas Theriault also won 6/8 of his faceoffs so far in the game. The period ended 4-3.
The IceDogs were looking for a strong, defensive third period. Ethan Sims came up big with a backcheck to stop the Otters from getting a scoring chance. The Otters did find the back of the net to tie the game at 4 with 7:43 remaining in the game. Mason Howard blocked a shot as time wound down in the period and Tucker Tynan stopped 43 of 47 shots on net.
This game went needed extra time, for the third consecutive game. This time, it went all the way to a shootout. Captain Akil Thomas got the lone goal and sealed the win for tonight's victory. The IceDogs have now collected points in their last four games.
