Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Joseph Sullivan scored 6:49 into the second overtime Saturday to give the Indiana Ice a 3-2 victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks in Game Two of the Clark Cup Championship Series at Young Arena.
Sullivan's wraparound goal, coming from goalie Cal Petersen's right side, was scored seconds after an Indiana power play had ended. During 87 minutes of action, Petersen made 59 saves, as the Ice outshot the Hawks 62-34. The best-of-five series between the teams is now tied at one win apiece.
The first period was busy for the Hawks' goaltender, who made 14 stops. The best of those came 2:07 into the action on a shot from Scott Conway, a quick chance set up from below the goal line by Brian Pinho. However, the Ice did score the lone goal of the period during a power play at 9:15 on Joshua Jacobs' full slap shot from the high slot.
In the second, Indiana outshot the Hawks again, 15-8, and it took another terrific glove save by Petersen early in the frame to keep Waterloo within one as he snared Jacob Pritchard's chance during a power play at 3:03. It was the Hawks who converted a special teams opportunity later in the frame at 12:37. Moving up the rink in transition, Drew Melanson's cross-ice pass found Tyler Sheehy in stride, and Sheehy snapped a shot to the short side top corner over the glove of Jason Pawloski.
A scoring sequence early in the third period put the Black Hawks ahead briefly. While shorthanded, Jake Horton came up ice and fired a shot that was deflected by John Wiitala past Pawloski at :39. However, during the same power play, Indiana answered nearly a minute later when Mitch Hults batted a waist-high puck past Petersen. Neither team could dent the net again during the duration of the scheduled time or in the first extra period.
The Clark Cup Championship Series continues at Pan Am Arena in Indianapolis Friday; Game Three will begin at 6:05 p.m. Central Time. Game Four at Indiana will begin at the same time on Saturday.
