Pensacola Ice Pilots News Release

PENSACOLA, FL - The Pensacola Ice Pilots were trying to stop a five game winless streak on Sunday night at The Hangar, but the visiting Columbia Inferno had other ideas.

The Inferno scored at 2:38 of overtime to beat the Ice Pilots 3-2 for their fifth win in six tries in the Gulf Coast this season. The series between the two teams had been largely dominated by the road team, with the Ice Pilots notching three victories in Columbia, South Carolina.

Columbia improved its record to 26-31-4-5 for 61 points, while the Ice Pilots fell to 19-41-1-4 for 44 points and 11-17-2-3 on home ice.

It was a goaltending dual all night long between Michael Mole of the Ice Pilots and Robert Gherson of the Inferno as the two faced a total of 88 shots. The Ice Pilots had a majority of the scoring chances from about midway through the second period and then on into the third period which they dominated.

The Inferno netted the lone goal of the opening period before the Ice Pilots picked up their play early in the second period. John Hecimovic tied the game with a blast from the blueline 5:34 into the frame from David Wrigley. Just over three minutes later, David Wrigley tallied a strange goal when the puck hit goaltender Gherson and went up over his head - hit him in the back of the shoulder and just dropped on the goal line. After a conference with the goal judge, the referee called it a goal. Sergei Ogorodnikov and John Hecimovic earned assists on the goal.

Just over two minutes later, Columbia tied the game 2-2 on a power play goal. The teams played scoreless hockey until the Inferno won the game just midway through the overtime period.

The Pensacola Ice Pilots were 0 for 6 on the power play, while the Inferno was 1 of 4.

Next action for the Blue and Gold is Tuesday when they begin their final road trip of the season with the first of two in Charlotte, North Carolina against the Checkers at 7 pm eastern, 6 pm central time. Fans can tune into the action on Classic Country AM1620 beginning with pre-game show coverage at 5:45 pm and the play-by-play with Denis J. Puska following at 6 pm.
