Ice Hosts Xplosion on Saturday

January 19, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Toledo Royal Knights News Release

Toledo, OH. The ABA Toledo Ice hosts the tenth-ranked Pittsburgh Xplosion Saturday night, Jan 21 at the SeaGate Convention Center in downtown Toledo. The Xplosion have won 7 of their last 8 games and are led by 6'9" player/coach Armon Gilliam, the former UNLV star and 13-year NBA veteran, one of two Pittsburgh players to be chosen this season as "Player of the Week." Last week, the ABA "Player of the Week" for the Xplosion was 6'5" guard Coleco Buie.

Leading the way for the Ice will be the team's leading scorer Jamel Stanten at 23.5 ppg. The 6'6" guard from Minnesota is also second in the team's assist category. Three other Ice players that will be called upon to help carry the scoring load will be Gameli Ahelegbe plus two recent newcomers, Lamar Rice and Jamel Gooding. The Ice recently welcomed the return of 6'11" center Levy Jones who had the opportunity to play for the Harlem Globetrotters the past few weeks. "We are glad to have Jones back with us," said coach Melvin Newbern. "Levy joined the Globetrotters just when he was beginning to knock down some open shots. We certainly will be bigger this time around when playing Pittsburgh. They do a good job on the boards so we will need to step it up in this area. With Jones returning to the center position and the addition of two bigger forwards in Gooding and Rice, we should be able to rebound the basketball against the Xplosion's big front line."

With the play-off picture just around the corner, this game looms big. "We are coming down the home strretch and we want to be one of the teams in the playoffs," said Newbern. Saturday night's opponents have met three times this season with the home team winning each time. Prior to the 7pm game tipoff, the members of the dance team, the Ice Angels, will be signing autographs for the public beginning at 615pm also at the Seagate Center.
