West All-Star Assistant Coaches Named
January 19, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today named the Assistant Coaches for the upcoming ABA All-Star Game to be played at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida on Saturday, February 11th. "Both of these coaches have done outstanding jobs with their teams and will give the West All-Stars an outstanding group to lead their team in the All-Star Game," stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. They are:
Clayton Shields, head coach of the Gallup Talons, a former New Mexico Lobo player from Baytown, Texas, who ranks fourth on the leading scorer list for the University of New Mexico. A four-year starter who was named WAC Mountain Division Player of the Year in 1997-1998, Shields has led the Talons to the #2 and #3 rankings in the ABA all season. Shields played professionally for several international teams. "What I got was a better understanding of the professional game. Over the last five years, I have been concentrating on coaching philosophies and strategies...and have been very fortunate to have a team that understands what we are trying to do...and it is proving to be very successful," said Shields.
Kermit Young, head coach of the San Jose Skyrockets, has achieved various outstanding accolades throughout his playing days including Converse All-American and Academic All-American for Montanta State University. Coach Young has worked as a high school counselor and administrator as well as a coach for over 36 years, and was director/administrator of the India Basketball Academy and well as a professional scout for Italian A-1 teams. "Coaching the San Jose Skyrockets and having the opportunity to work with Kazumi and James Hasagawa has been one of the highlights of my career. I am pleased and honored to be one of the All-Star coaches and looking forward to working with Gary Grant and Clayton Shields and bringing home the All-Star trophy for the West."
