Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
Pensacola, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers lose to the Mississippi Surge Friday night in The Hangar.
The Pensacola Ice Flyers fall to the Mississippi Surge in The Hangar Friday night. Though the Ice Flyers fought valiantly for the first two periods, holding the Surge to a 1-1 tie, Mississippi was able to take the lead half way through the third period and didn't look back.
Dan Ehrman, assisted by Whitehead and Shultz, put one between the pipes giving the Ice Flyers an early lead. As most games between these two heated rivals, the two teams would showcase their physical sides throughout the match. The first period featured ten penalties along the way to a total of 27 offenses and 104 penalty minutes on the night. Mississippi would not be able to counter on the scoreboard, however during the first, and the Ice Flyers enjoyed the lead heading into the locker room.
Mississippi did not waste any time, however, slipping their first marker past Ice Flyers' net minder Ryan Scott less than one minute into the 2nd period. Scott would stop nine of ten shots in the 2nd period on his way to a 32 save night. The Ice Flyers continued to battle throughout the period and both sides saw no quit as they found themselves deadlocked 1-1 heading into the 2nd Intermission.
The 3rd period, however, would belong to Mississippi. Matt Zultek, in only his second game back after his 10 game suspension from earlier this year, would fire two missiles into the back of the net to seal the victory and first star honors on the night. The Pensacola Ice Flyers could not counter and found themselves down by two when the final horn sounded.
Though the night did not produce the results the team was looking for on the scoreboard, it did off the ice. The team had partnered with the St. Baldrick's Foundation and Nemour's Children's Hospital to host an official St. Baldrick's event at the game. Over 70 individuals joined to shave their heads and raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research. The team, earlier this season, led by Merchandise Coordinator, Willa Sweetin and a small army of dedicated volunteers, set a goal of $25,000 for the event. Just a little over an hour before the puck dropped, the team surpassed their goal on their way to raise over $26,400 for St. Baldrick's.
The Pensacola Ice Flyers will play their final weekend home game of the regular season tomorrow night as they battle the last place Louisiana IceGators in The Hangar. It is Fan Appreciation Night and the Friday Night (Black and Gold) Jerseys will be auctioned immediately following the game.
