ICE Edge Warriors 6-5 in Gritty OT Affair

Winnipeg and Moose Jaw faced off tonight, as both teams entered their final four games of the Subway Hub Centre season. Both teams are coming off identical 5-2 wins on Monday, with the ICE beating Swift Current, and the Warriors beating Prince Albert. Carl Stankowski received the start for Winnipeg and Boston Bilous got the call for the Warriors.
The ICE came out of the gate flying and went up 2-0 in the first seven minutes of the period. Jakin Smallwood started the scoring with a deflection of an Anson McMaster shot to put the ICE up after just 1:08. Skyler Bruce then scored his second of the season as he took the puck along the half-boards on the power-play, walked into the slot and fired a quick shot past Bilous. Moose Jaw would get one back as Brayden Yager took a long shot from the right point that Stankowski got a piece of, but Riley Krane was on the doorstep to fire it home, after Stankowski made the first rebound save. The Warriors would tie it up on the power-play before the period ended as Cade Hayes took a shot in the slot that was blocked by Karter Prosofsky, but the puck bounced right back to him and he made no mistake the second time around to bury it top corner. Shots were 12-10 in favour of Moose Jaw in the first.
A few more post-whistle incidents led to a power-play for Moose Jaw, where Firkus cleaned up some garbage from a Cole Jordan point shot to take the lead. ICE led in shots 25-19 after two periods.
Peyton Krebs started the third period off by extending his point streak to 20 games as he skated into the Warriors' zone on a power-play and ripped one low glove side on Bilous. The goal came at 2:30 and was unassisted. Daemon Hunt would put the Warriors up by one after ripping a shot glove side past Stankowski, but the ICE would respond 1:56 later as Skyler Bruce found a deflected Prosofsky shot and buried it from the slot. Moose Jaw went ahead with five minutes left as Hayes drove wide and pulled the puck across Stankowski before tucking it in far side for the go-ahead goal. With the net empty, and the extra attacker on, Jackson Leppard dished it off to Krebs from the point, and the ICE captain slid it far side past Bilous' pad to tie the game and force overtime.
In the overtime period it was Smallwood who would be the hero as the ICE assistant captain drove wide on Hayes, before stretching around Bilous and burying the puck far side for the end-to-end game winner.
Winnipeg is back in action on Friday against the Saskatoon Blades, looking to force pressure on Brandon for top spot. Puck drop is 5:00pm CT.
