Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. â The Long Beach Ice Dogs (3-4) were eliminated Monday night, losing to the Alaska Aces (6-2) by a score of 3-1 in Game 3 of the West Division Finals. The loss capped a remarkable turnaround season by the Ice Dogs, who had a 44 point improvement over last season and made the playoffs for the first time in three seasons while knocking off the defending champs in the first round.
After a scoreless first period, the Aces jumped out to a 1-0 lead with Chris Minard's third goal of the playoffs at 7:11 of the second period. Just over five minuets later, the Aces took a 2-0 lead when Mike Scott scored on the power play.
At 6:48 of the third, the Ice Dogs' Michael Lambert scored his team leading fifth goal of the playoffs to cut the score in half. Evan Cheverie assisted on the goal, giving him his team leading ninth point of the playoffs. The Ice Dogs pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, but veteran Kimbi Daniels scored the empty net goal for Alaska to seal the win and the series. The Aces advance to the National Conference Championship and await the winner of the Trenton Titans / Reading Royal series.
The Ice Dogs' Sebastien Centomo made 31 saves in the loss, while Peter Aubry earned the win with 23 saves. Alaska finished 1-3 on the power play while stopping both of Long Beaches' opportunities. This series marked the third straight time the Ice Dogs have been swept in the second round of a playoff series. Long Beach has never lost to anyone but the eventual league champion in any playoff series in the teams' history.
The Ice Dogs finished with a regular season record of 43-20-9, good for 2nd place in the West Division and third overall in the ECHL. For information on season tickets for the 2005-06 season, call (562) ICE-DOGS or visit www.icedogs.com.
