Ice Cream Festival Offers Cool Way to Help Children

Mississippi RiverKings News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss.—RiverKings forward Jay Neal will be at the Ninth Annual Big Scoop Ice Cream Festival to benefit Ronald McDonald House at Agricenter International on Saturday, September 6th, sponsored by Schnucks grocery stores. The event, originally slated for July 26th, was rescheduled after the July 22nd storm swept through Memphis. The day's festivities include the opportunity to sample a variety of ice cream and other frozen treats and sweets, and runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Neal will participate in a contest from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Cost is $7 per person. Children under three get in free. For more information call 901-529-4055 or visit the Web at www.rmhmemphis.org.

Instead of doling out goals, assists, passes and punches, Neal will serve up scoops of ice cream in an attempt to capture first place in the Celebrity Sundae Making Contest. Last year, the Redbirds cheerleaders competed and incorporated pom poms in their sundae. Representatives of a local bank adorned their sundae with fake money. The RiverKings brought the 2001-2002 championship cup and piled it high with ice cream and toppings.

Other competitions this year include the ice cream feeding contest and the "Mix It with Milk and Jell-O" contest. The RiverKings mascot and other costumed characters will be on hand to meet, greet and take photos. There will be face painting, a puppet show and a silent auction.

"This is an event that will be a lot of fun for families," Neal said. "People can enjoy a day with their kids and help families at Ronald McDonald House at the same time."

Ronald McDonald House is a home away from home for families and children receiving treatment at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The RiverKings are working on a community investment project with Ronald McDonald House in which the RiverKings provide a designated amount of tickets to the house for one game each month so families staying there could attend. Neal would serve as an ambassador to the families staying at the facility.

"I'm looking forward to building on what we have in place with the Ronald McDonald House," Neal said. "I'm looking forward to providing a smile to the kids and some entertainment to the families, and to just doing a small part to make a difference."
