Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears defeated the Fayetteville FireAntz 5-4 in a shootout in front of a crowd of 4,361 - with the win, have taken sole possession of first place.
Fayetteville jumped out to the lead at 14:35 when Zach Carriveau fired a sharp angle shot off the side of Bryan Hince's helmet and into the goal. The Ice Bears were not down long - 80 seconds later, Berkley Scott was seen blazing down the side walls and received a three zone pass from Jason Price where Scott broke in all alone and beat Fayetteville netminder Kevin Murdock.
Fayetteville as not finished, with time winding down Trever Hertz buried a shot past Hince to put the visitors up 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
Knoxville ambushed the FireAntz in the second period by rattling off three unanswered goals in the first 8 minutes of play. Ryan Salvis scored just 49 seconds into the middle frame. David Segal scored on a break-a-way at 6:57 and Francis Drolet poked the puck past Murdock after Salvis flipped the puck behind the netminder on a dump in play.
Fayetteville cut the lead in half at 15:02 of the second when Derek Elliott fired a shot past Hince.
The third period was a tight checking affair - it wasn't until the FireAntz were awarded their only power play of the game when Eric Satim was sent off for a cross-check. It took less than 20 seconds with the man advantage for Fayetteville to tie the game. Randy Cameron drew the game even at 12:35 of the third period.
The teams traded chances in the final seven minutes of the period and forced overtime. Each team had glorious opportunities during the 3 on 3, five minute bonus period but no victor was determined. It took a shootout to determine the winner - Hince stopped five of five Fayetteville attempts and Travis Janke scored the only goal for Knoxville to seal the deal for the Ice Bears 5-4.
