Ice Bears Take 5-3 Victory in Augusta
December 1, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Knoxville Ice Bears marched into the James Brown Arena Thursday night and took a 5-3 victory over the Augusta RiverHawks. Goaltender Bryan Hince was the star for the visitors as he made 37 saves for his 10th win of the season
The win is the Ice Bears' second against the RiverHawks season, the only team in the SPHL to do so. The win moves them to within three points of the RiverHawks in the race for first place in the SPHL regular season standings.
The Ice Bears jumped out to a quick one-goal lead when defenseman Steve Wiedler let a shot go from the point that beat RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis. However the RiverHawks were able to even things up just a few minutes later when Neil Graham converted a nice Chris Doyle pass. The game stayed that way till late in the first period when the Ice Bears opened it up. They scored two goals in just 23 seconds as both Ricky Helmbrecht and Eric Slais found the back of the net.
The Ice Bears were able to extend their lead in the second period to three goals while on the power play. Star forward Kevin Swider directed a puck towards the RiverHawks' crease that Olthuis was able to stop, but the puck sat loose near the goal and defenseman Mark Van Vliet was able to poke it across the goal line.
The RiverHawks showed signs of life as Doyle was able to score a power play goal early in the third period to narrow the lead to just two goals. The Ice Bears quickly regained the three-goal lead when Swider was able to convert a pretty three-way passing play on a 5-on-3 power play. The RiverHawks would again narrow the deficit to two goals when Neil Graham would score his second of the night, but it would be too little as penalties would limit the RiverHawks' ability to stage a comeback.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, December 2nd as they play the Mississippi Surge. It is Mascot Night, featuring over 15 mascots from organizations throughout the CSRA. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
