Ice Bears' Super Hero Effort Shut out Havoc

November 15, 2013 - SPHL (SPHL)
Knoxville Ice Bears News Release

Knoxville, TN - The Knoxville Ice Bears hosted the Huntsville Havoc in the Civic Coliseum tonight for the first time this season. The Ice Bears shut out the SPHL's most potent offense 2-0 in front of a crowd of 3,514 fans.

The Ice Bears struck early when Cody Dion hit the net behind previous Knoxville goalie, Jesse Kallechy just 1:23 minutes into the game. Jon Higgins and Bryan Hince assisted the goal. The goal was Dion's fourth goal in the last three games. It was a fairly quiet rest of the period until, with only 2.4 seconds left of play, Mark Van Vliet scored his first goal of the season when he slipped the puck straight past Kallechy with assistance from Phil Bronner.

No goals were scored in the second period. At the 11 minute mark, Francis Drolet received a 10 minute game misconduct penalty and 5 minutes for kneeing. Van Vliet and Huntsville's Sam Cannata were each given 2 minutes for roughing. The Ice Bears stifled Huntsville's 5 minute power play.

Huntsville received a second 5-on-4 power play opportunity when Brett Valliquette was given 4 minutes for roughing, but came up empty. The Ice Bears ended the second period leading 2-0. Huntsville saw more power play time in the third period, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity. The Ice Bears were given a 2 minute penalty 6:42 minutes in for too many men on the ice. The Havoc appeared to have scored, but it was ruled no goal due to goalie interference.

The Havoc thought they had scored again with 7:17 left, but it was ruled no goal by the officials. The Havoc were awarded their final power play with 3:04 left in the game. Van Vliet was given 2 minutes for holding. When the clock ticked down to 25 seconds the Havoc pulled their goalie to skate with the extra attacker, but they couldn't beat Hince and the Ice Bears defense.

The Ice Bears will return to home ice tomorrow night, Nov. 16, at 7:30 to face off with the Columbus Cottonmouths. Join Chilly and his friends from the Fur Circus for an evening of family entertainment. It is also teddy bear toss night. When the Ice Bears score their first goal, fans can toss their teddy bears onto the ice. The stuffed animals will be donated to needy children in the Knoxville area.
