Knoxville Ice Bears News Release
Knoxville, TN - Rob Sich did his best to prove to Knoxville fans that he is happy to be an Ice Bear by scoring the game-winning goal in his first appearance on home ice. Sich had one goal and one assist on the night as the Knoxville Ice Bears defeated the Huntsville Havoc, 4-2.
The Ice Bears hammered the Havoc physical play from the start. Knoxville's stingy defense held off Huntsville through two power plays. Despite great effort, both teams ended with a scoreless period and tied at nine shots on goal.
Huntsville broke the deadlock scoring 7:24 minutes into the second period when Kevin Cooper fluttered a soft backhand past goalie Bryan Hince. The Ice Bears were quick to tie the game as Frank Furdero picked up the puck from Brett Valliquette and shuffled it past Havoc netminder Mark Sibbald.
At 14:12 of the second period Huntsville's Ryan Kretzer peppered netminder Hince who blocked the first two shots but on the third shot, the puck slipped in and Huntsville gained a 2-1 lead to finish off the second period.
The Ice Bears fought back to tie 4:57 minutes into the third period. Sich passed to Furdero who moved the puck to Fletcher who got one past Sibbald.
The Ice Bears took the lead for the first time 8 minutes later. Sich skated in on a breakaway and roofed the puck up to the net over Sibbald making it a 3-2 game. Furdero and Chris Pontes assisted the goal. Sich has scored five goals and five assists in four games as an Ice Bear.
With 20 seconds left in the game, Fletcher received the puck from Pontes and moved it to an empty net for the final goal of the evening. Fletcher's power play goal ended the game with the Ice Bears defeating the Havoc 4-2.
Come cheer on the Ice Bears tomorrow night as they face off with the Fayetteville FireAntz. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. The Ice Bears will be hosting Food Allergy Awareness night featuring gluten free concessions and Fan Appreciation night. The first 2,000 fans will receive a 2010-11 Ice Bears poster courtesy of TCS of Tennessee and all team members, coaches and Hunnies will be signing autographs following the game. Fans can also enjoy a post game concert from Christian rock band New Method presented by Johnson Bible College.
