Ice Bats To Have New Home in 2006, As Cedar Park Voters Approve Arena Project
February 7, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Austin Ice Bats News Release
The Austin Ice Bats of the Central Hockey League will have a new "Bat Cave" beginning in 2006, after Cedar Park voters approved a $30.8 million bond issue for the construction of a new multi-purpose events center in the city. The new events center, approved by a 53 to 47 percent vote, will serve as the permanent home of the Ice Bats, as well as be used for concerts, performances, graduation ceremonies and other civic events.
The events center will be built and operated under a partnership agreement between the City of Cedar Park and Phoenix-based Global Entertainment Corporation, parent company of the CHL.
"We want to thank the citizens of Cedar Park for welcoming us to their city," said Ice Bats President Jeff Buch. "We're looking forward to the Fall of 2006, when we begin play in a new state-of-the-art facility."
"We especially want to thank all of the volunteers, including some of our season ticket holders, who worked so tirelessly to make the events center a reality," Buch said. "Their efforts enabled voters to make an informed decision, and we hope they'll take enormous pride in a great accomplishment for Cedar Park and the entire Austin area. We're grateful for their efforts, as well as those of past and current City Council members in Cedar Park and City staff."
"We also want to acknowledge and thank everyone associated with Travis County and the Expo Center," Buch said. "They have been tremendous landlords and without their efforts, there would not be hockey in Austin. Next season, we will be celebrating our tenth year in the Expo Center, and hopefully we can cap off our stay with a championship or two."
The Ice Bats are 22-18-3 on the current season, just two points behind Corpus Christi for the CHL Southeast Division lead. The Bats return from games at Wichita and Oklahoma City for a Sunday home contest against New Mexico. A free post-game skate with Ice Bats players follows Sunday's 4:00pm game.
